Kathryn Thier
Kathryn Thier
Kathryn Thier was introduced to yoga as a teenager in New York City. Nearly 20 years later, after a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and a career as a reporter, she is helping students use yoga to heal their bodies, quiet their minds, and develop their souls. While pregnant for the first time, she completed a 220-hour yoga teacher training from The Bodhi Tree at Community Yoga in June 2008. She formed strong bonds with her classmates, who helped call her daughter Ruby into the world with a chanting circle hours before labor began. Ruby is already following in her mother’s footsteps: she frequently performs downward-facing dog and attended a Kundalini prenatal yoga workshop with Gurmukh in Columbia, S.C. as a one-month-old. Kathryn received her prenatal yoga certification from Asheville Yoga Center in March 2009. She looks forward to helping pregnant students use the practice of yoga to develop a conscious approach to pregnancy, birth and motherhood. She is married to Michael, a high-school English teacher who is very flexible with his time, but stiff with his tendons and ligaments. Kathryn is also the mother of two rescue dogs, Phantom and Scrap.
